Professional Qualifying Assessment (PQA)
Introduction.
PQA was introduced in January 2018 by Malaysian Optical Council. Applicants who successfully completed the clinical attachment (for optometrist only) and passed the PQA will be registered under Section 19 (2), Optical Act 1991 for optometrists or under section 18 (2), Optical Act 1991 for opticians.
The objectives of PQA assessments are:
- To determine the competency level of applicant who obtained qualification not listed in the Second Schedule of the Optical Act 1991 for registration purposes.
- To cater for applicant who obtained qualification listed in the Second Schedule of the Optical Act 1991, but the program was done for 3 years only.
- To allow Malaysian citizens who obtained a degree from an unrecognized institution to register as an optometrist under the Optical Act 1991
- To ensure that only competent optometry practitioner is registered with Malaysian Optical Council.
The role and responsibilities of The Association of Malaysian Optometrists (AMO) in PQA is as administrator to facilitate in terms of coordination of examination and financial matters.
